Neil Welliver . 1929 - 2005.

The Maine landscape is the subject of Neil Welliver's large oil paintings, drawings, and prints. His work focuses on woodland scenes that convey an honest appreciation for the land in which he lived. In contrast to his paintings, his prints portray a more intimate and direct interaction with the subject, due mostly to their smaller scale.

The seven plates for Trees Reflected on Ice were created by Welliver at Wingate Studio and at the artist's studio in Maine. Based on the oil painting Study for Trees Reflected on Ice, Welliver painted with sugar lift and white ground over the aquatinted plates which were subsequently etched. The painterly image was printed in a cool, muted palette of seven colors.

Welliver is represented by Alexandre Gallery in New York City.
