Dana Frankfort born 1971

Dana Frankfort’s work begins with a word or piece of text, which functions as a fixed formal departure for a lavish and complex layering of painted and repainted color relationships. The words themselves are seen as universal, commonly understood visual symbols, devoid of meaning but familiar and stable in their formal structure. This text becomes the structure upon which the painting is based, while color and gesture become the actual means of expression.

During the summer of 2010, we worked with Dana on a new print, Yes. In Yes, the words "Christ" and "Yes" are superimposed over each other, drawn and redrawn in gestural brushstrokes and then buried and partially obscured by layers of color and texture. Frankfort uses the unique color properties of combined, printed etching inks to create a rich, complex color landscape, full of surprising and beautiful relationships.

Dana Frankfort is a New York based painter, currently living and working in Boston, MA. Dana has shown her work internationally, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2006. She is represented in Boston by La Montagne Gallery, and you can find images of her paintings through their website as well as the Saatchi Gallery and the Bellwether Gallery.
