Lise Lemeland

Lemeland creates paintings and prints that explore our preconceptions about decoration. She is captivated by the worlds of color and pattern revealed in the decorative arts from India, Turkey, Central America, Europe and Japan. Textiles, carpets, lace and embroidery all inspire her work. These pieces discuss typical distinctions between decorative design and expressive image-making, calling attention to the viewer's perceptions of "low" and "high" art.
