Ahmed
Alsoudani
Born 1975.
Ahmed Alsoudani - an Iraqi-born artist now living in Berlin - creates
unsettling depictions of abstracted figures in ethereal landscapes.
His work draws from memories or specific visual experiences that
suggest a strange interaction between brutality and the mundane.
A muted, nearly monochromatic palette is disrupted by explosions
of bright color. Static planes, solid shapes, and carefully rendered
architectural forms are juxtaposed with active drawing and brushwork
in which bodies recombine into abstract objects. Ahmed's work often
begins with a disturbing image, but in its construction and the
repeated reworking of a particular instant, it transcends horror.
We are left with a beautiful object that alludes to its ugly source
and the emotions it conjures.
At
Wingate Studio, Ahmed approached etching with an open mind and his
unique style. Given his limited experience with intaglio printmaking,
experimentation with different tools and techinques was central
to the creaton of Untitled. Ahmed learned many new techiques
and united them in original and exciting ways. As a result, Untitled
is refreshing in its use of intaglio printmaking and ultimately
retains the painterly feel of Ahmed's work.
Born
in Baghdad in 1975, Ahmed lived for many years in the Middle East
before coming to the United States in 1999. He completed his BFA
at the Maine College of Art in 2006, and received his MFA in painting
from Yale University in 2008.
